Speedy Tuesday - Omega Speedmaster Professional Radial Dial 1978A well used Speedmaster naturally is challenging to find already currently, if you would like a completely original and authentic watch that is. Apart from the current prices; while i commenced with buying and collecting Speedmasters more than a decade ago, it was not a great deal of problem to find a nice vintage piece with all of original details. Right at that moment, these details weren't even as necessary as vehicle most of the watch I stumbled upon at watch fairs, on eBay etc counseled me fine.If an all authentic regular vintage Speedmaster Professional is already nearly impossible to find today, why not consider the genuine out-of-this-world (no pun intended) Speedmasters?Speedmaster Professional Radial DialA number of years ago, we reported regarding the NASA issued watch from astronaut Reinhard Furrer ( 'We've found an astronauts watch' article). This watch (with radial dial) belonged officially to NASA and it was issued to Furrer during ESA training activities in Europe (guided by NASA). Prepare yourself, he kept the watch and years later it popped up on my dining room table because (then) owner didn't know what it really was. We made a consultation and brought this watch to obtain me check out it.Since I'd not witnessed anything like this before, I needed to dive involved with it and needed the help of Omega. It appeared to be on the list of 56 NASA issued replica watches that were delivered by Omega in 1978. This delivery appeared as the result of the new tender by NASA for replica watches to be used with the Space Shuttle program which was on the verge of start. This particular Speedmaster Professional radial dial model has also been called Project Alaska III (1978). All projects that Omega did for NASA were called "Alaska". It is confusing sometimes since several people think of it as the white dial Speedmaster that Omega did around 1969/1970 (Alaska Project I, also for NASA) and also the later (2008) modern white dial re-edition (here). The watch we've to put you today, the 1978 Omega Speedmaster Professional radial dial, wasn't issued to NASA since it became a prototype. It was used as a spare watch on request by NASA. NASA only ordered 56 replica watches, engraved with NASA's own internal (coded) serial number and reference number (SED12100312-301).I have been previously informed though, that Omega produced total of 60 cases and 100 dials. The rest of the 4 cases were saved in Switzerland as prototypes or simply as replacement should on the list of 56 issued Speedmaster replica watches would be damaged with an extent it could become unusable. If you were strolling around the interwebs, watches followed auctions etc. you could have seen the use of radial dials in non-NASA issued Speedmasters, or prototypes. The story plot goes that Italian Omega distributor bought 40 of such dials a while ago, and set them into 145.022-69 cases. So these replica watches do not possess the clean Seahorse-only case back that has a NASA number (SED12100312-301) engraved, in this way Speedmaster Professional radial dial we've here.Because of the "Buy American" act, Omega had the cases produced in the united states, from the Star Watch Case company. The dials were made in Switzerland, but was without the Swiss Made writing into it (a result of the same Buy American act). NASA needed these replica watches to look such as a US product, but assembled in Switzerland. These Omega Speedmaster Professional Radial dial replica watches are rare. Rare, since it is a prototype and something in the 4 existing pieces on this configuration that really weren't supposed to leave the Omega premises first of all. That also causes it to be tough to convey a value for this watch. The Speedmaster Professional radial dial that belonged to Furrer (and another astronaut) was intended as auctioned at Bonhams, but it really is served because ownership of the watch is difficult to determine. Will it participate in the man who received it via Furrer or does it still are part of NASA? Anyway, that auction could have been very worthwhile because it was on the list of 56 issued pieces to NASA. This one, is one of the 4 remaining (spare) replica watches of the series (the serial can also be inside the same array of course) and confirmed so by Omega.Besides rarity and possible value, I just now like the dial of the watch. The gorgeous designed sub dial scales are just awesome. It can be astonishing the amount of some more Arabic numerals on the three dials can add to the classic Speedmaster dial. The nicely discolored (or aged) tritium around the hour markers provide it with this nice vintage look, and also the hands with discolored tritium, or what's left of the usb ports. breitling colt Small dials have this clear grain motifs and the printing is slightly distinct from on other Speedmaster dials. The tiny minute counter has dots as markers, the hour counter has two small bars and also the minute counter shows rectangular in shape indexes, both filled and 'frames'.On one of the images above (and below, inside gallery) you will find that true back provides the NASA SED12100312-301 inscription and also the Star Watch Case company symbol. This watch uses the proven Lemania caliber 1873, generally known as Omega caliber 861. A compelling and reliable movement which has been used since 1968 by Omega for their Speedmaster until today (and that is an up-to-date and modernized version, Omega caliber 1861) rolex watches cost .How cool could it possibly be when Omega decides to introduce the radial dial for their hand-wound Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch again? Whether it is in the limited editon. Sign me up please.A big thank you to Roy and Sacha Davidoff for letting us enjoy this watch and also have Bert try taking some incredible images of it. Always visit the website for much more Omega goodness. This particular Speedmaster Professional Radial Dial watch (145.022) is usually mentioned in Roy & Sacha Davidoff's book "Ultimate Speedmaster Exhibition", the sunday paper due to their successful event not too long ago in Geneva.
